Soap Operas Raise Status of Women in India

  • A recent study shows that the introduction of cable TV and popular programmes such as soap operas have a significant effect on the attitudes of Indian villagers towards women.
  • In the years 2001-2006, about 30 million households gained a cable service and popular soap operas were more likely to show women working outside the home, controlling money, and having a high educational level.
  • The villagers in the study who had added cable were associated with improvements in measures of women’s autonomy, a reduction in the number of times in which wife beating was deemed acceptable, and a reduction in the likelihood of wanting the next child to be a boy.
