The 15 Women Who Run a Fortune 500 Comany
- In the 2009 Fortune 500 list issued in April 2009, there were three more women than on the previous list.
- At 15, the number of women CEOs marks a 20% increase over the list a year earlier, but still only 3% of the total.
- Only one woman disappeared from the last list: Paula Rosput Reynolds, who arranged Safeco’s profitable merger with Liberty Mutual.
- The women were good for their companies. All but two of the companies rose in the Fortune 500 rankings, some significantly, including Patricia Woertz’s stewardship of ADM, which lifted her to top rank among the women CEOs.
- One continuing development, partly aided by the women’s management, is that female CEOs tend to be clotted among the top companies, for 7 of the top 100 companies are run by women. (But that means the share in the ranks 101-500 is only 2%.)
- Oh, and yes, research cited on this site holds true: The glass cliff scenario applies in some cases like Rite Aid and, at the start of Anne Mulcahy’s tenure, Xerox, and almost all of the women look quite svelte.
