Women-Run Businesses to Double in Next Decade

UK research group sees 2 million-plus firms, plus 10-fold rise in women running blue chips

  • The number of women-run businesses will double in the next decade, according to The Future Laboratory, to more than 2 million companies.
  • The London consultancy also predicted that the number of women running FTSE-100 companies would rise by a factor of 10 by 2021.
  • “The Rise of Lipstick Entrepreneurs,” The Future Laboratory’s study, is based on growth in women-owned companies in the past year, which capped a decade of sustained growth in such firms.
  • Theresa May, the Conservative Party’s Shadow Minister for Women, said in the study, “Women who want flexible hours and to be their own boss have been drawn to setting up their own businesses and there are now more than one million self-employed women — a 17% rise since 2000.”
