- In the last column, we shuffled ForbesWoman’s top 10 states by their gender gaps, removing the bias of high-cost, high-pay states (eg Alaska). Forbes’ ranking are based on median weekly pay as reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Though technically not a state, Washington, DC, ranked highest in large part because of the large number of high-paying federal government jobs. And while ForbesWoman did not mention it, government restrictions on gender inequality for like work probably have a lot to do with the small gender gap. That advantage probably helped neighbouring Maryland.
- In general, the worst pay for women and the biggest gender gaps were in the West (except California and Washington, obviously) and the South.
- Mississippi was the worst state for women’s wages, with a median weekly wage of $510, for 75% of correspondent men’s wages. But 12 ranks higher is Louisiana, with a wage gap of 72.7%.
