Australian Managers' Pay Inequity Is Worst at the Top

Disparity shrank a little in 2009, and is smallest for the lowest-paid

  • The Australian Institute of Management’s gender pay gap measure shrank slightly in 2009 at most levels, but remains highest the higher up the corporate ladder you look (or go).
  • The average gap at the 759 Australian workplaces surveyed was 10.2%, down from 10.6% in 2008.
  • Among CEOs, the gap was largest, at 16.4%, down 2 points. The difference for general managers was 12.5%, down 0.8 point. Female sales and marketing leaders made 10.6% less than their male counterparts.
  • What pulled the average gap down was support staff, where men make 6.2% more than women.
