Linda Tarr-Whelan, a woman whose career has gone from nurse to mother to Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, has a new book that lays out just how to change the decision-makers so better decisions get made. And the change that needs to be made is to have more women make those better decisions.
In her new book, “Women Lead the Way: Your Guide to Stepping into Leadership-and Changing the World,” Tarr-Whelan presents facts and figures to dispel once and for all those fairy tales that still keep women back. Instead, she shows women how to build confidence and skills and master a distinctive approach to leadership, one emphasising collaboration, communication and consensus.
But Tarr-Whelan, a contributor to 20-first.com, isn’t just talking to women. She reminds men that one of the best ways to rise on the corporate ladder, and in a corporation that will survive in these hyper-competitive times, is by championing women. The book explains how “closing the leadership gap is a win for everyone-it reflects women’s values and vision, brings in new ideas, creates a more balanced and productive work environment, a revitalized social compact and demonstrable positive effects on the bottom line in business and government.”
Publisher’s Weekly, in making the book a Web Pick of the Week, lauded “Women Lead the Way” by writing, “A smart, illuminating work for women (and the men who work with them), this leadership self-help from prominent women’s issues scholar and advocate Tarr-Whelan presents a discussion of women’s leadership styles and roles rooted in theory, research, and a shining intellect, as well as thorough knowledge of the practicalities of the modern workplace.”
