Most New Small-Business Jobs to Have a Woman as Top Boss
1 in 3 new US jobs in next 8 years is expected to be at a woman-run company
- About one-third of US jobs created over the next eight years are expected to be at women-owned small businesses, the Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute predicts.
- The New York-based think tank’s report called its projection “striking” — jobs at women-run businesses now make up only 16% of the total.
- More than half of all jobs created by small businesses are expected to be at companies owned by women. That might be because women-run companies have handled the financial crisis better, and with greater confidence than other enterprises.
- The figures came from analysing the 15 million jobs the U.S. Bureau of Labor expects will be created by 2018. Reasons for the surge in women-bossed new jobs include:
- Higher rates of self-funding among women’s businesses than men’s, allowing them greater flexibility.
- The faster growth rate for women-owned businesses than those started by men.
- Fields and occupations dominated by women are expected to grow in coming years.
- The implications of this change are vast, says Mark Wolf, director of the institute, the research arm of Guardian Life Insurance Co. of America: “The workplace is going to change.” Change even more, we think he meant.
