Allianz Diversity Council Chief Gets It: "Gender Diversity Is a Business Issue"
Jay Ralph: "if we want to attract the best to our workforce, we need to increasingly target women as employees"
- Jay Ralph, the head of Allianz’s Global Diversity Council, says the main point of the German insurer’s diversity initiative is women — and that is because that is where the greatest gain for the company lies.
- In an internal company interview, Ralph noted that the company “wants to ensure that we are fully tapping into all talent capabilities within the Group, capitalizing on the impact diverse teams have on better business performance, and maximizing the potential of women as our customers”.
- “In order to create change, we are addressing gender diversity like a business issue.”
- Progress in improved gender diversity will be an element of executives’ compensation.
- The company is not pursuing quotas but rather a global target of 30% women in the talent pool by 2015. “A goal creates serious focus and requires planned actions to achieve it.” Among those policies is “to consider at least one woman in each recruiting process for top management positions”, internal promotions of identified female top talent, and urging women to avail themselves of needs-based training and mentorship programs.
- Noting that women are majority of talent in most countries, Ralph concluded, “If we are looking for high performing individuals to bring problem solving ability and enhance the quality of management, we cannot afford to ignore the capability and potential of women. In other words: if we want to attract the best to our workforce, we need to increasingly target women as employees.”
