Women accused of causing earthquakes in Iran
The BBC reports that a senior Iranian cleric suggested that wanton women are to blame for the earthquakes that have plagued his country. Young Iranian women have stared to show their hair or don tighter clothing, bending previously inflexible religious and societal rules. Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi argues that, in doing so, they disappoint God and cause these tragedies.
*Over the course of the last ten years, earthquakes have taken the lives of tens of thousands of people in Iran.
- Last Friday, Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi, a senior Iranian cleric, informed his followers that women have played a role in provoking these earthquakes.
- Mr Sedighi stated that “Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes.”
- Recently, young Iranian women have started to reveal their hair and wear tighter clothing.
- He proclaimed that the only possible solution is to respect Islam’s moral codes so a to not disappoint God.
- Seismologists have repeatedly warned that Tehran could be hit by a crippling earthquake anytime because it is located on numerous tectonic fault lines.
- Even President Ahmadinejad has declared that the capital’s 12 million inhabitants should relocate.
Goodness knows women have been responsible for a lot of evil, but this takes the quake.
