A homogenous new Cabinet in the UK

Timesunion.com published an article criticizing the scarcity of women as well as the lack of diversity in Britain's new coalition Cabinet. The enthusiasm surrounding the new government is in large part due to the expectation that change is on its way, that finally, the elected men accurately mirror their country's values. One thing is for sure though, the country's new Cabinet does not mirror the UK's population.

  • The coalition Cabinet put together by David Cameron and Nick Clegg after the United Kingdom’s general election holds four women and nineteen men.
  • There is Theresa May, at the Home Office; Caroline Spelman at Environment; Chryl Gillan, Welsh Secretary and Baroness Warsi, the Conservative Party chairman.
  • Twenty-two of the twenty-three Cabinet members are white and sixteen of them went to Oxbridge.
  • This situation is specific to England.
  • Women constitute approximately half of Norway’s and Sweden’s cabinets.
  • In Germany, there are six women in a sixteen person cabinet.
  • In Austria, women represent six of the thirteen top ministers.
  • In Switzerland, there are three women and four men in the Cabinet.
  • In the UK, the number of women in the Cabinet has actually decreased. Tony Blair’s Cabinet had six and Brown’s had five.
  • Cameron has made efforts to transform his Conservative party into a more modern and tolerant one but this is not reflected by the country’s new political leadership team.
