Marrakech elects its first female mayor
On June 12th, 33 year-old Fatima Zahra Mansouri was elected mayor of Marrakech. In a polling of the municipal council, she ousted the veteran Mayor Omar Jazouli 54 votes to 35. Mansouri is only the second woman in Moroccan history to take a mayoral position.
- Marrakech is among Morocco’s biggest cities, with over a million inhabitants, and a key tourist destination.
- So far, Asmaa Chaâbi was the only woman to hold a mayoral position in Morocco.
- Fatima Zahra Mansouri is a 33 year-old lawyer who followed her studies in France.
- She ran for election as part of the Party for Authenticity and Modernity (PAM).
- At first, her candidacy was a controversial issue.
- Moroccan newspapers informed the public that a number of parties allied with the PAM were opposed to Mansouri’s candidacy and had threatened to break away if her position was consolidated.
