Australia is Developing a Standard on Gender Inclusive Job Evaluation

In an effort to propagate gender equity and reduce the still considerable wage gap, an Australian Standard on Gender Inclusive Job Evaluation is being put together. The voluntary Standard aims to create a collect and evaluate job information in a gender inclusive fashion. Work began on this project in early December.

  • The Australian Standard on Gender Inclusive Job Evaluation is meant to:
    1. help job evaluators put an end to gender bias
    2. prompt structured participation regarding job evalutions
    3. define principles that can be utilized in the classification of jobs and procedures regarding salaries
  • It will be voluntary but it is hoped that large private sector employers will make use of it as part of their commitment to both equity and success.
  • This initiative is similar to one launched in neighboring New Zealand in 2006.
  • The New Zealand’s Standard was adopted by a number of large employers.

“Assessing jobs according to the work that is performed, the skill levels and responsibility involved, rather than long-held bias about what is ‘men’s and women’s work’ will also go some way to help close the gender pay gap in Australia. The gender pay gap is over 30% in some industries.”
Susan Biggs, Chairperson of the Standards Committee

  • Australian businesses, industry groups and all other interested parties will be able to participate and provide feedback over the course of 2011 during a public consultation period.
  • The Standard should be finalized early 2012.
  • The organizations participating on the Committee are:
    1. Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
    2. Australian Council of Trade Unions
    3. Australian Human Resources Institute
    4. Australian Industry Group
    5. Employer of Choice for Women
    6. Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency
    7. Finance Sector Union of Australia
    8. Hay Group
    9. Mercer (Australia) Pty Ltd
    10. University of New South Wales

Woops! So sorry for the last post which may be a bit cufnosing to you. And aplogies to David. I have a link to the Independant, especially because of my acquaintance, the famous\' Barry Everingham, and iIthought HE had written the article. Thus my response in the personal manner. Regardless of that, I STILL find it interesting and fun that David has written what I have been sprouting for some time and have no doubt we have thoughts and opinions replicated around the country. I have bored my wife and friends at various Xmas and New Year get togethers by saying the same sorts of things. I have often said, if there are so many of us around the Country saying basically the same thing, WHY is it that we ARE ALL WRONG AND THE SELECTOIRS RIGHT?? They seem to have been answerable to no-one and for Andrew Hilditch to come out and say what he did about the selectors having done a good job beggars belief. Hopefully those words will cement his demise at least. Surely CA knows the cricketing public can not suffer fools so to speak- for any longer. I am sorry we have all become so harsh about this but it shows how strongly the Aussie public does feel about it and having shared the experience with a young Pom and his mates, it made it all the more relevant. As David says, it IS in our souls. There would be many like me, still playing in our 50s, who do so because we are tragics and just love the game and all it represents in our society. Those in positions of power need to remember that they are SO privileged and are OUR representatives and whilst they have a job to do and, supposedly protocols and criteria to follow, they need to explain selections that draw the sorts of responses made this year. For example, when or how was Beer on their radar? How can he have been when he couldn\'t get a game for Victoria, was an unknown to all but those in St Kilda and grade in Melbourne or those who took a punt on him in WA? If it was in response to Warnie talking him up then how damning is that of the selectors? He has done ok and we don\'t begrudge that we were thrillled to see the excitement of his involvement in Sydney. But the facts are he should never have been selected if there are guidelines etc that govern how selections and the game is run. There will be many who will say that Peter Who and others were in the same boat and that it can work but when there was BS given as the justification , alarm bells ring and make people think these blokes have lost the plot. How can Hughes have been selected when he had had such a poor Shield season and why throw him into the Perth game under such pressure? His non selection in England has come back to haunt us as, who knows, if they had followed their selection then, he may have gained the experince and improved his skill to be at a higher level than he is now. There have been just too many random and unexplained selections which have caused such rancour and bewilderment amongst so many the selectors HAVE to answer at times such as these. It is hoped that all levels do come up with valid responses. The last thing we need is a review now that comes back with a yes we have reviewed and we promise to do better but that there are no changes. I don\'t necessarily think we should be laying the blame on Tim either but to coach at all three forms of the game is obviously too much for anyone. Is it done by others? Surely Greg Shippherds record would indicate he could do something at T20 level. Someone else of great credibility could do the 50 over format and have a specialist Test Coach who spends time around the Shield only, work with the kids at the Academies, runs the extra Test Squad I suggested earlier as an extra team in the Shield. Surely there are smarter brains out there than ours that can come up with a new system for the new domain we are in. Hopefully others in the powerbroking have similar thoughts to yours David and we will get a review and response that moves us forward with positive change. Our cricketing souls\' deserve it and our players, past, present and future deserve those that serve and prepare them to so with the utmost care and planning.
