New Gender Diversity Projects Set the Bar Higher
In a new piece in The Financial Times, Andrew Hill reports on two new projects that will help companies measure their progress in closing the gender gap: The multinational Gender Equality Project (GEP) and Australia’s Gender Performance Ratings (GPR). Rather than punishing companies for not achieving goals, both initiatives are looking to reward the ones that do make policy improvements in recruitment, training, pay, etc. Positive publicity and “five-star” awards are among the rewards being considered.
“Gender equality is just the tip of the iceberg: it’s an expression of the ability of the company to reward more than one leadership and decision-making style.” — Aniela Unguresan, Gender Equality Project co-founder
The GPR project is still in its early stages, but the Gender Equality Project already has signed on 11 companies (e.g. Pfizer, L’Oreal, Alcatel-Lucent, Accenture) for the pilot program. The GEP plans to score companies in five areas, all considered equally important:
- Recruitment and promotion
- Training and mentoring
- Equal pay for equivalent work
- Company culture
- Work/life balance
Assessments are to be made through the use of statistics, an employee survey, a questionnaire and a qualitative analysis. A certification system will be developed so that companies can compare their performance with other GEP members.
GEP co-founder Aniela Unguresan hopes that the project will result in improvement across the entire group and the adoption of best practices.
