Banks Prefer to Hire Women
But That Doesn't (Yet) Apply to Top Positions
With so many female university graduates in the Gulf and other Arab regions, more and more banks are hiring women. The companies prize female employees for the work ethic. No, women have yet to make up a significant portion of the managerial ranks, but especially at Sharia-compliant banks, local hiring of women is strong, especially relative to other industries.

Sharia-Compliant Banking Is Different, So a Group of Women Share What They Know
Even Arab veterans of conventional banks, familiar with the language and the social code, need to learn a lot when they enter the world of Sharia-complaint banking. So a group of women at one such institution, SIB, set up a networking group to share information. That kind of initiative is why two of the network’s founders are senior managers — the only two of the 15-plus senior managers at a company whose workforce is 45 percent female. Mind you, that isn’t that bad, relative to competitors.
