Arab Women Enter a Limited Political World
Governments Recruit Women for a Variety of Reasons
While the Arab world may lag behind other parts of the globe in terms of women in leading business positions, many governments in the region have promoted women, bringing them into cabinets and quasi-legislatures. This top-down push to advance women, in contrast to what happens in many companies, helps autocratic and oligarchic governments burnish their liberal credentials, especially when dealing with other countries. Many participants applaud the approach, though there are critics.
