Network Your Way Through the Boardroom Door

Top female executives have what they need to get into the boardroom except the connections, and only networking can solve that problem, according to Sue Paish, president and CEO of the Canadian drugstore chain Pharmasave. She told a panel discussion on increasing diversity on boards, “We have to figure out how to get to the right audience with a loud enough message.” Though only 13 per cent of board seats in Canada are held by women, Paish suggested that perceptions about the “old boys club” are ill-founded. Instead, she said, aspiring women must set goals, develop networks that include men, and engage with communities to “get known and get trusted.”
