Proving That Diversity Pays

Building the Case, Mathematically, for a Varied Board of Directors

A group of middle-aged white guys is less likely to make the smartest decision than a more diverse group. Accepted wisdom among the people visiting this site, maybe, but now the University of Michigan professor Scott E. Page says he has proved the matter conclusively. “I’m not making political statements, he says. “These are mathematical results.” How so? By showing that a broad group will address more issues, consider more alternatives, look at more possible outcomes. And while his results were presented in an environment more concerned with increasing Black representation on boards, the conclusion rings just as true for women, a group that, like Blacks, does not seem to be making many gains of late in board representation.
