Girls take lead in math
Countdown...
Boys usually perform better than girls in mathematics, while girls dominate in reading. But in countries where other cultural inequities between the sexes are minimal, girls have caught up with boys, according to a study from the European University Institute. A massive new American study published in SCIENCE magazine confirms the trend. The New York Times reports that a study paid for by the National Science Foundation has found that girls perform as well as boys on standardized math tests. Now that girls take as many advanced math courses as boys do (unlike 20 years ago), their scores have caught up. The findings are reported in the July 25th issue of Science Magazine. The report was led by Janet Hyde, a professor at the University of Wisconsin.
