Australia Business Leader Urges Considering Quotas

Business Council Leader Katie Lahey: "Let's at Least Discuss It"

After an Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workforce study showed that the number of executive managers at top Australian companies fell 2 percentage points since 2006, to 10 percent, Katie Lahey, chief executive of the Business Council of Australia, told The World Today that the country should consider quotas:

  • “Like all women would like to feel that we’re selected on merit for our positions, but clearly that strategy alone isn’t working and I think many employers are as mystified as I am about the efforts that have gone into this issue have, are clearly not having any traction to date.”
  • “[F]or those women who don’t want to self select out, what is it that we’re doing that’s allowing them to achieve?”
  • “So there’s some part of the jigsaw that’s missing, I don’t know whether it’s quotas. I hope it isn’t, but let’s at least discuss it.”
