Indians Don't Want a Female Boss
Bias Cuts Across Broad Geographic and Generational Swath
- Indians in general do not think highly of the idea of a female manager.
- In a survey that asked the same number of male and female businesspeople in India, women were scoffed at as poor planners, bad bosses and ineffective managers. The respondents’ average age was 28, indicating that the prejudice is multigenerational.
- Areas were women were held in lowest esteem included the relatively liberal areas of Kolkata and New Delhi, with 84% of Kolkatans saying that women are not good at business planning.
- By contrast, the cities of Pune and Ahmedabad reported relatively progressive views about female managers. In Ahmedabad, nearly 40% of respondents supported having a female boss.
