Success and the City
Big City Gals Pull Ahead on Pay
In some large US cities, college-educated women in their 20s now earn more than men – in Dallas and New York, significantly so. Such women in their 30s are even with men in New York (though women’s wages so far have usually fallen on average as women age). Why? Greater geographic flexibility, perhaps, or a lower likelihood of having a family than their suburban sisters. For the phenomenon is strictly for those in the big cities: Nationally, women are falling further behind men, and even the college-educated 20-somethings make only 89 percent of what corresponding men make.
