SAVE THE MALES
En route to Women Season (see yesterday’s post), I’m reading a highly relevant new book by Kathleen Parker called Save the Males. A short quote sets the tone. “In the process of fashioning a more female-friendly world, we’ve created a culture that is hostile toward males, contemptuous of masculinity, and cynical about the delightful differences that make men irresistible.”
Although I think this is probably truer in Anglo-Saxon countries than elsewhere, and follows in the footstep’s of books like Susan Faludi’s Stiffed, it is worth reiterating that we will not make sustainable progress for women without the full partnership of men comfortable in their roles.
The Economist this week said that meritocracy is inexorably leading to matriarchy. So today’s task is to ensure that the world benefits from the formidable talents of the women who now represent 60% of university graduates in Europe and North America.
But tomorrow’s will be to ensure that our sons like our legacy.
