Germaine Greer Speaks Up for UK Group Advocating Women Entrepreneurs
Writer backs Prowess's campaign to gain more funding for businesses
- The writers and veteran feminist Germaine Greer is backing the UK women’s enterprise network Prowess in its efforts to advocate for more female entrepreneurs to restore the economy.
- Greer was addressing the Prowess international conference March 4-5, 2009, in Blackpool, where the group was rallying support to urge banks to increase lending to female entrepreneurs so that women can generate more economic activity.
- Positive evidence points to women business owners driving a new, more robust feminine enterprise model based on diligent risk taking and collaboration which take account of wider social values alongside profits, Prowess reported.
- Many women such as Cherie Blair have pointed out how women being involved in business offers hope for ending Britain’s (and the world’s) recession.
- Prowess said its research found that there was a 40% increase in requests for business advice in February 2009, but that most women’s businesses were debt-free or had made adequate provisions for their debt.
- Still, it added, a decrease in lending and government funding is adding pressure to businesses that Prowess members work with as well as limiting training programs.
