Singapore groups groom women leaders
2 new programs join longstanding efforts
- Several groups in Singapore are identifying and promoting women for leadership positions in the city state.
- The Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations is the leading such group, and perhaps the best known.
- The Young Women’s Leadership Connection was started in 2008 by UBS and the senior minister of state for finance and transport, Lim Hwee Hua. The initiative identified about 150 female undergraduates at local universities, offering seminars, networking sessions and mentoring to groom leaders for the corporate, political or community sectors. Among the women who have addressed the students is the Ascott Group CEO Jennie Chua.
- Another UBS-related effort is the Power Up programme, which focuses on women at the bank who are in their 30s, encouraging and assisting them to take on greater challenges and thus distinguish themselves for advancement. “It’s succession planning,” said UBS Singapore’s chief operating officer Teo Lay Sie.
