A Modest Proposal for Hormone-Happy Male Traders
Bloomberg Columnists Suggests Testosterone Tests ... and She Is Only Half Kidding
- The Bloomberg commentator Susan Antilla has seen much of the research about gender differences in the finance industry. Her conclusion: “Guys … [g]et a handle on the potential economy-killer that’s running through your veins. …”
- Addressing “toxic testosterone”, she cites such studies as John Coates’s to demonstrate how dangerous men can be on the trading floors or even as private investors. “[S]ome of you — and you know who you are — are operating at levels that require serious adult supervision.”
- After a brief consideration of female hormones for overaggressive traders, Antilla reaches the solution that is at the crux of WOMEN-omics: “[G]etting a better gender balance in the financial industry and markets.”
- Antilla concludes: “In the next bubble, maybe the guy-heavy companies will do best. But wouldn’t we all feel better if the highs were lower and the lows were higher?”
