Chile Revels as Global Summit Pushes for More Women in Leadership

Chilean President Tells Summit that Discrimination Against Women Is Doomed

  • The Global Summit of Women 2009 in Santiago saluted women’s gains in the workplace but called for further progress, with an emphasis on putting more women in charge of companies.
  • With 38% of companies with a woman on the board, Norway stood out at the meeting, well ahead of the US at 15% and the EU at 9.7%.
  • Alas, no figures were available for Latin America. However, the AFP news service cited statistics from the magazine Latin Trade in Latin America indicating that 64 of the top 100 companies in the region have no women on their boards and that only 5 of the boards are headed by women.
  • But besides being the site of the event, Chile could take satisfaction from having a female president. President Michelle Bachelet opened the summit by saying that the discrimination suffered by the women in society will disappear, though slowly.
  • Bongi Ludidi of the South African Department of Gender and Empowerment of Women urged that summit participants, who were primarily from outside the private sector, cooperate more with companies to increase the number of women in business and in leadership positions, AFP added.
