Mandelson and others lead charge for female entrepreneurship
Women In Business conference in London hears from men as well as women
- The 12th annual Women In Business conference in London gathered hundreds of women from around the world, especially Europe and the Muslim World, and focused in part on encouraging female entrepreneurs.
- But the BBC noted that some of the strongest advocates at the May 2009 conference for women-run businesses were among the relatively few men attending.
- The British Business Secretary, Lord Mandelson, led the charge, arguing that the economy would recover from the economic crisis faster if more women could be persuaded to set up their own businesses. He said the US was much better at fostering female entrepreneurship than the UK.
- “Women have a huge amount to contribute to business at top levels,” he said. “There are barriers holding them back. This is wrong. It’s not just for the women as individuals; it’s unfair to the rest of us because our economies are losing out as a result.”
