20-first Gender Balance Scorecard Reports
Where the World's Top Companies Stand
20-first publishes its cornerstone Global Gender Balance Scorecard report annually, in addition to a series of country and industry focused reports. These scorecard reports look at a single measure of progress: the gender balance of the Executive Committee of top companies around the world.
Why Focus on Executive Committees?
Whereas much attention has been paid to the gender balance of Boards, we argue that the Executive Committee is a much better indicator of corporate progress in managing and developing talent in a truly meritocratic and gender “bilingual” way.

3rd Annual Global Gender Balance Scorecard
Gender Balance of Executive Committee of TOP 100 Companies in three key regions
- In this 3rd annual survey, the 20-first Global Gender Balance Scorecard looks at the gender balance of the Executive Committee of the TOP 100 companies in three key regions of the globe.
- Most of the world’s top companies have embraced the idea that corporate governance through all-male boards is a thing of the past. Our 2011 survey finds that 74% of companies in the US and 68% in Europe now have at least two women at board level, as many have progressed beyond the token “one.”
- However, as 20-first has long argued, boards are not the best metric for evaluating the actual gender balance inside companies. Instead, the gender balance of the Executive Committee is a much better indicator of progress, as it looks at the executive team actually running the business.
- If we look at Executive Committees of these top companies, the data shows that companies have not achieved the same progress as they have in balancing their boards. 59% of US companies have at least two women on their Executive Committee. Europe is far behind with 20% and Asia lags with only 4%.
- Globally, 90% of Executive Committee positions in our survey sample are filled by men, with only 10% by women.
- Our 2011 Global Gender Balance Scorecard evaluates where companies are in balancing their Executive Committees. The scorecard segments companies into one of 6 categories: Asleep, Token, Starting Smart, Progressing, Critical Mass, and Balanced.
- The full report below describes what the top companies have achieved to date on their gender balance journey.
Country Focus Reports
Ranking of TOP 20 Companies in US, UK, France and Germany
20-first’s new research looks at what the TOP 20 companies in four key markets have achieved in balancing their Executive Committee teams.
The US and UK are a bit ahead overall, as the numbers show that most of the top companies have gotten a token women on the team. While fewer French companies have any women on their top team, the ones that do have moved a step beyond tokenism, and a few to outright balance. In Germany, even getting one woman on the team looks like a major challenge. More…
Focus on the United States
Top 20 Companies
The US leads our global sample on the gender balance at ExCo level in its top companies. Only 10% of its top 20 companies have NO women on the Executive Committees. However, most companies have appointed a single, token women, usually in a staff or support function. Despite the decades of effort that the US has put into this topic, only a single company in our TOP 20 list has really achieved balance.
Focus on the United Kingdom
Top 20 Companies
What a paradox the UK is. It leads Europe on the gender balance issue in its TOP 20 companies. Only 15% of its top 20 companies have NO women on the Executive Committees. This compared to Germany, for example, where 65% of the top companies haven’t even achieved tokenism.
Focus on France
Top 20 Companies
France is a very illustrative country on gender balance because it is so clearly divided between companies that ‘get it’ and companies that haven’t even started to think about it.
Focus on Germany
Top 20 Companies
Germany lags behind the big countries on gender issues. This is no surprise to anyone, and the DAX 30 has self-imposed targets of 30% women at all levels.
Industry Focus Reports
Gender Balance in Key Industries
20-first also zooms in on a number of key industries to analyse the progress of top companies across sectors.
Focus on Natural Resources Industry
Top 20 Companies
Natural resources is not a sector that people automatically associate with gender balance. In fact, most people assume that oil, mining and mineral companies would be ‘naturally’ male dominated. More…
